You set off once the pistes have been handed back, when the mountain is empty and the groomers are starting their night. That is the whole appeal: riding where you skied in a crowd eight hours earlier, headlights on, without meeting a soul. The guide is not a formality, he knows which routes are open to snowmobiles, which are not the pistes, and where the night's grooming has already passed. Two candid points. First, it is noisy and it smells of petrol: anyone after the silence of the mountains will be far better served by a night snowshoe outing. Second, it is cold, far colder than skiing, because you make no effort of your own and you ride into the wind. We provide suits, helmets and gloves, and we insist you wear one layer more than you think you need. That said, for a teenager or a group of friends, it is the evening they talk about on the way home.
