This is the activity nobody thinks to ask us about and the one that produces the strongest reactions. You find yourself at the foot of a frozen waterfall, crampons on and an axe in each hand, and you climb. The La Daille site, at the entrance to the resort just after the tunnel, is five minutes from the village: no long approach, no day lost to travel, you can climb ice in the morning and ski in the afternoon. What reassures most people once it is explained: you are never at risk of a free fall. The guide sets the rope from above, you are belayed throughout, and if you let go of everything you simply hang. No climbing experience is needed. What you need is a head for heights and a willingness to have cold hands for the first ten minutes. One honest caveat: ice depends entirely on cold. Three days of thaw and the fall becomes unclimbable. We watch the temperatures the week before and warn you as soon as it looks compromised, rather than have you walk up for nothing.
