City walking tour
Cannes visits badly on your own: you walk down the Croisette, photograph the steps, and leave having seen the postcard and nothing else. The town has two faces, and a guide who can connect them changes the day entirely: medieval Le Suquet, with its monks' castle turned museum and its hundred-and-nine-step tower, then the twentieth-century Croisette, its palaces and its festival. Between the two sits Forville market, the town's real centre of gravity. We work with accredited guides in French, English and Italian, and we build the route around opening days rather than the other way round: climbing to Le Suquet on a winter Monday means finding the museum shut.
The options
Le Suquet and the Musée des Explorations du Monde
The old town, its steep lanes and, at the very top, the former castle of the Lérins monks turned museum: Mediterranean archaeology, tribal art, musical instruments from around the world, Orientalist and Iranian galleries. The medieval square tower is climbed by one hundred and nine steps, fifteen people at a time, and it is the best panorama in Cannes. Closed on Mondays outside high season.
Forville market
The town's real larder, under its hall, Tuesday to Sunday from seven to one, and daily in summer. This is where the Croisette's chefs shop, and the stop we place first when lunch is being cooked at your villa. On Mondays the hall changes trade and becomes a flea market.
The Croisette and the Palais des Festivals
The Belle Époque palaces on the landward side, the private beaches on the seaward one, and the steps of the Palais des Festivals, which everyone wants to be photographed on for eleven and a half months of the year. It is the stretch you can walk from any hotel on the bay, and the one we keep for late afternoon, when the light drops onto the Estérel.
Half a day, or a full day with lunch and an afternoon on the Croisette
All year. Forville market runs Tuesday to Sunday from 7 am to 1 pm from September to June, and daily in July and August. On Mondays it becomes a flea market. The municipal museums close on Mondays outside high season
Pricing
We have not yet settled our rate for this tour. What will determine it: the guide chosen and the language, the length (a morning or a full day) the number of people, and whether you walk throughout or keep a car between stops. Museum entries and the lunch table are quoted separately.
