You set off once the pistes have been handed back, when the area is empty and the groomers are beginning their night. That is the whole appeal: riding where you skied in a crowd eight hours earlier, headlights on, without meeting a soul. Two things should be said honestly. First, it is noisy and it smells of petrol: anyone after the silence of the mountains will be better served by a night snowshoe outing. Second, it is cold, far colder than skiing, because you make no effort of your own. We provide suits, helmets and gloves, and we insist you wear one layer more than you think you need. That said, for a teenager or a group of friends, it is the evening they talk about afterwards.
