Courchevel's altiport is worth the trip in itself: two thousand and eight metres of altitude, a five-hundred-and-thirty-seven-metre runway and an 18.66% gradient, the steepest in the world for an international airport. Taking off from it is an experience before you have seen anything at all. Then comes the Trois Vallées domain, the Vanoise glaciers opposite, and (depending on the duration) Mont Blanc. We choose the slot by visibility rather than by diary: a scenic flight in haze is worth nothing, and we would rather move it.

From €1,000, and the price rises with the duration: a flight over the Trois Vallées costs markedly less than one pushed out to Mont Blanc and its glaciers.
