Courchevel has an advantage few large resorts share: the Vallée des Avals begins a few minutes from 1850 and has never been developed. No lift, no groomed run, no noise: a wild valley where you see chamois on the rock bands and, lower down, the tracks of mountain hare in fresh snow. That is where we take anyone who wants to understand what the Tarentaise looked like before the resorts. The other route we love is quite different: the Praz forest below, where you walk under spruce and larch to the oldest tree in the massif, a silver fir the leader will point out without warning. It is the right choice in bad weather, because the forest shelters you from the wind and the light stays readable there when the top of the mountain is in cloud. No particular fitness is needed: if you can walk, you will manage within ten minutes. We can have lunch brought up halfway round and drive the group back down if legs give out.
