Les 3 Vallées means over 600 kilometres of piste, 156 lifts and seven linked resorts: the largest ski area in the world, by a wide margin. The figure impresses, but it is not what justifies a private instructor. What justifies one is that an area this size is badly crossed on instinct: between Courchevel, Méribel and Val Thorens there are links you take before eleven and others you do not attempt after three if you want to get home without finishing by bus. A good local instructor knows this by heart. He also knows that 85% of the area lies above 1,800 metres, so where to find snow that has held through a thaw, and where to avoid it on a windy day. We match them to who is skiing, a six-year-old, a teenager eyeing the Courchevel park and an adult returning after twenty years need neither the same person nor the same patience.
