In early December, the World Cup arrives on the Face de Bellevarde. The best weekend of the year to discover the resort, and the worst to arrive without a plan.
There’s a moment in early December when Val d’Isère stops being a resort getting ready and becomes, all at once, a ski resort again. The Critérium de la Première Neige is that switch: a men’s World Cup stop on the Face de Bellevarde that officially opens the resort’s winter. In 2026 it falls on 12 and 13 December, giant slalom on the Saturday, slalom on the Sunday.
The Face de Bellevarde is no ordinary piste. It’s one of the most feared slopes on the tour, very steep, very technical (it hosted the 1992 Olympic downhill) and standing at the bottom you understand why racers talk about it with that mix of respect and apprehension. Even knowing nothing about ski racing, the spectacle stands on its own.
Why it’s a good time to come
Because it’s the only December weekend when the resort is fully alive before the holidays. The lifts are turning, the restaurants are open, the atmosphere is there, and yet you aren’t yet in the rates and density of the Christmas period.
It’s also, for a skier, an excellent window: early-season snow in Val d’Isère is often very good, precisely because the resort skis high. Where other areas are still improvising, this one works.
What to know before coming
- The weekend is short and the resort is far. Allow three to three and a half hours from Geneva or Lyon in normal conditions, and plan to arrive on Thursday the 10th or Friday the 11th of December in the morning rather than on Saturday. On the Friday evening, the athlete presentation takes place from 5:45pm on avenue Olympique, in the heart of the village: it’s free, it’s short, and it’s the best moment for children.
- Accommodation books from the autumn. The available stock in Val d’Isère in early December is smaller than in February, and this weekend fills it.
- Dress to stand still in the cold. Early December, at altitude, motionless, in the shade of a north face: it’s harsher than anything you’re imagining.
- The best viewing spots at the finish are taken early in the morning. The bottom of the Face is the natural place, but there are also very good vantage points around the mountain, I place clients according to the day’s programme.
- Skiing on race day is perfectly possible: part of the area stays open, and the pistes are quieter than usual since everyone is watching.
The rest of the weekend
Val d’Isère in December has a particular energy, that of a season starting: the teams are fresh, the chalets have just reopened, and there’s an excitement in the village you no longer find in February. The evenings are lively without being saturated.
My typical programme over those three days: arrive Friday, ski Saturday morning while the resort is looking elsewhere, the race in the afternoon, and a Sunday of pure skiing before heading back down. It’s short, it’s dense, and it gives a very accurate sense of what this resort really is.
